ADHD medicine organisational hacks, tricks & tips

Various types of refillable pill boxes on a table with plants behind. For adhd medication organisation organization

All pill boxes together

Wracking my brains trying to remember if I had remembered to take daily pills and if yes, which had I taken, which did I need to re-order, and the repetitiveness of taking the caps off and remembering which bottle to pick up was such a faff, so I needed to find a different way of taking pills. Sometimes the old ways are the best. So, with much reluctance to shop in the elderly section, I turned to dosset boxes (not sure of the resistance since most of my hobbies are those traditionally attributed to the older generation, gardening, embroidery, and I love sitting on the sofa with a blanket). I’m very much in my granny era.

There are links to Amazon for the boxes I mention next to each section.

How to do it:

  1. Choose the time of day you are most motivated.

  2. Collect all of your pills

  3. Get all of the boxes out

  4. Open all of the boxes

  5. Carefully place pills in piles (you want to fill them like a factory line).

  6. pick up one box at a time and add all the pills for that day.

  7. Shut the box put it away.

  8. Carry on until all boxes are filled

  9. When you run out mark a box however many days ahead of when you need to re-order with a sticker to remind you.

Top Tips

  • For prescribed medication: Once you’ve filled them up, work at least 7 days (depending on your ordering time) back from when they run out and put a reminder on your phone for that day or put a sticker on the box to mark it as the day you need to reorder.

  • Never take them out of the house. If you need ones that go with you somewhere look at the travel ones I recommend. You’ll end up losing them, it’s not worth it.

  • Some pharmacies offer tablets in specifically pre packaged daily dosset form, speak to your pharmacy if this is an alternative you’d like to pursue.

Use instead of the monthly ones. I have 2 in 2 different case colours. I have also stuck my name and phone number on a sticker on it, so when I lose them they can be returned to me.

Handy pill boxes (for medicine used occasionally, such as painkillers, antacids, etc)

Handy pill box

I have several of these boxes and have put them in these places:

  • Bag

  • Car

  • Office

  • Kitchen

  • Bedroom

Top Tips
Put a label on the box with the area it lives in (i.e., kitchen), so you know if you end up with one in the wrong place, it came from there, and your phone number on it so it can be returned to you if you leave it somewhere else.

Spend time filling them all up, and make labels for the outside screen, naming what's inside and the strength of the pill. I’ve seen other people stick a picture of the brand on the outside, which I love, but I don’t have the dedication for that.

Labelled pill compartments, you can add the strength of the pills also

I have:

  • Painkillers

  • Antihistamine

  • Heartburn tablets

  • Emergency medication

  • You can also add spare the inner part of the loop earplugs.

Re-ordering medicine

If you need to email your doctor to reorder, pre-write the email and keep it in your notes so you don’t have to remember all the long, hard medical names.

Some pharmacies will reorder your medicine and text you when it’s ready. This is the dream.

Et voila, all your medicine drama is solved… hopefully…
